How Covid-19 has rejuvenated the world of golf

It wouldn’t be an over-exaggeration to say that the Covid-19 pandemic changed everything. The way that we work and how we live our lives, how we shop, eat out, exercise and use our spare time have all seen a dramatic shift like little other in living memory.

Spending almost two years in the safe confines of our homes has meant the reintegration back into the wider world outside our front door has been a huge adjustment for some. For many others, once society opened back up again the thrill of being out and about was a welcome reprieve. After so long apart from our friends, family and colleagues the opportunity to live our lives again with new experiences has been liberating.

The human connection and the fresh air that people longed for during the lockdown feel all the sweeter post-pandemic now we know what it’s truly like to be without it. So, what better place to reconnect with people and nature than the rolling greens of the golf course?

The rise of golf through the pandemic

After the initial lockdown began in March 2020, golf courses were one of the first outdoor sporting activities to re-open when measures to were lifted in England in May 2020. At this time players could play with members from the same household, or one player from another household, as long as there were social distancing measures. This seems to be a key driver of growth in golf participation, with it becoming one of the few recreational activities initially available after lockdown.

Golf courses and driving ranges were closed again as restrictions were tightened once more in January 2021. The appetite for golf could be seen when 129,000 people signed a petition in protest asking the government to rethink the decision, with the CEO of England Golf Jeremy Tarling saying the sport was “naturally” socially distanced, in the open air and people used their own equipment, which made it extremely safe.

A key driver of the growth in golf participation was when it became one of the few recreational activities initially available after lockdown.

March 2021 saw the final reopening of golf courses and since then, the love of the sport has been on a steady increase. In 2022, Sporting Insights (previously known as Sports Marketing Surveys) released data that saw a 10% increase in rounds of golf played in the first nine months of the year than in the equivalent period in 2021. Contrasting against pre-lockdown years, Q3 2022 rounds were up 40% against 2019.

As public confidence grew post-pandemic, the pent-up demand to get back to leisure and recreational activities saw growth in spending and in sports participation. According to Statista, consumer spending on recreational and cultural services in the United Kingdom grew by 14% in 2021 while in the same year the total sports participation rate in the UK was 60.9% throughout the country.

Golf popularity is on an upward trajectory

The R&A (The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews) has recently released data in conjunction with the governing bodies for amateur golf in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, revealing that there were 5.6 million adult golfers playing either nine or 18 holes last year, the second highest figure recorded in more than 30 years of monitoring. In 2019, the equivalent figure was 3.7 million, growing to 5.7 million in 2020 and then 5.3m the following year. This sees a huge growth in the sport’s popularity, during and since the lockdown, as people clearly took advantage of an outdoor activity that could be undertaken safely.

“It is very positive to see the number of on-course adult golfers grow in Great Britain and Ireland last year,” Phil Anderton, chief development officer at The R&A said. “The sport remains very popular on full-length courses as large numbers of lapsed or non-golfers who took up the sport during the pandemic continue to enjoy playing.”

The R&A has recently been raising awareness of the positive benefits that golf has for mental health.

The data also found that 20% of adult golfers in 2022 were female, up from 15% in 2019, seeing another upward trend in popularity. The R&A has also recently been raising awareness of the positive benefits the sport can have for physical and mental health adding another important benefit to the appeal of the sport.

Why charity golf days are a great way to fundraise

Even though we are currently faced with rising inflation and a cost of living crisis, people still want to give. In 2021 people in the UK gave £10.7 billion to charity according to a report by Charities Aid Foundation. In recent data revealed by Statista 66% of people in England said they gave to charity in 2021/2022, which sees an increase from the 63% who said they donated in 2020/2021.

Lessons learned during Covid have created an empathetic and philanthropic feeling amongst people with a community spirit and unity from a hardship suffered together. People are also keen to get out of the confines of the home and socialise again. A brilliant way to bring these two notions together is with a charity golf day – the perfect excuse to get together and play a beloved round of golf whilst also raising funds. During the pandemic, 60% of charities reported a loss of income so holding a charity golf day could be a great way to celebrate the freedoms we now have whilst bolstering those figures.

A charity golf day can be a great way to raise funds whilst also enjoying the freedoms we now have to socialise again.

Benefits of a charity golf day

  • A brilliant way of raising funds that was impossible during lockdown
  • Get an abundance of fresh air
  • A good form of exercise
  • Great for mental health
  • Spend time in a beautiful outdoor setting
  • Reconnect with friends and colleagues
  • A great way to socialising and network again
  • Have lots of fun
  • Enjoy competitive camaraderie
  • You get to do something you enjoy whilst giving back to a great cause.

Barnham Broom: ‘A hidden gem’ that was the perfect choice of venue for a large food and drink conference

Hosting events is something we take an enormous amount of pride in here at Barnham Broom. Be it a small office away day or a large muti-ticketed conference – we have venue space on-site which will tick any box.

When it came to planning its first-ever food and drink all-day conference, the Broadland Food Innovation Centre knew they needed a location that would be large enough to host a range of afternoon workshops as well as seating over 120 attendees, with nearly 50 also joining virtually, for the morning key-note speakers. Thankfully, Barnham Broom could offer just that!

Broadland Food Innovation Centre

Established by the University of East Anglia, the Broadland Food Innovation Centre is a European Regional Development Funded (ERDF) project, designed to be a hub that supports food and drink SMEs within the region to grow and develop supply chains. The facility, located just off the A47 to the west of Norwich, consists of multiple food-grade units and kitchens.

As well as the physical space, it has created a Food and Drink Innovation Cluster which links local food supply chain organisations in Norfolk and Suffolk together via networking, support, collaborations and workshops tailored to business growth needs.

For its Innovation Cluster, The Broadland Food Innovation Centre decided to host ‘Nourish: Food & Drink Innovation Conference’ – a sell-out event with over 120 attendees and almost 50 virtual guests, which took place at Barnham Broom.

Charlotte-Louise Beach, Marketing & Events Coordinator for the Research and Innovation Division of the UEA, helped organise the event. She said, “We wanted to find a location within Norfolk and Suffolk, a hidden-gem, and Barnham Broom perfectly fit the bill. Having so many suites and beautifully decorated rooms, with such spectacular views, we knew it would be the perfect place to hold the Nourish Conference, which utilised all rooms for the afternoon workshops. We have Cluster members from all over East Anglia, so ensuring there was adequate parking was essential in order for all attendees to be able to access the venue and make the most of such an exciting day.”

The event, which was hosted at Barnham Broom, accommodated 120 delegates for talks and workshops throughout the day. Photo: Lesley van Dijk

The event’s agenda was jam-packed full of speakers and workshops for the delegates to enjoy. The day kicked off with a delicious local breakfast and coffee, with plenty of space for the attendees to congregate to register and network. After an introductory welcome, a range of project partners delivered lively talks to the large room of over 120 guests, while the technology was in place for those who couldn’t be at the event in person to dial in remotely.

The speakers consisted of Cassandra Stavrou MBE, founder of PROPER snacks, followed by James Averdieck who built the award winning Gü desserts brand. After a mid-morning break, catered with snacks, more talks followed from Hannah Springham, co-founder of Farmyard Frozen, and Joseph Cordy, Head of Commercial at Paddy & Scotts, who told the story of this ambitious coffee company.

A sit-down lunch from the wonderful caterers at Barnham Broom was next, then a talk full of insights followed, from Andrew Fearne, Professor at Norwich Business School. The large group was then split into smaller break-out groups across the venue for workshops, ending with a drinks reception that allowed more time to network whilst enjoying local delicacies and the beautiful views around the venue.

The scale, length and multiple elements of this event were all easily accommodated by Barnham Broom, plus also being a member of the Innovation Cluster helped us to be even more involved. We aim to offer incredible support to the event organisers, and it was great that this was recognised at the Nourish Conference, whose organiser Charlotte added, “Nothing was too much for the team at Barnham Broom. We felt incredibly supported, from initially booking the venue with the amazing Sarah, through to organising final details with Debbie, and finally with Harry and the team having constant smiles and a can-do attitude on the day. What a team to be surrounded by!”

The feedback from the attendees was incredibly positive. The delegates enjoyed the fact that the workshops were in separate rooms because it allowed them to move about between sessions. There were also plenty of compliments on how the food was absolutely delicious and offered a wonderful variety that catered for all dietary requirements. We take this as an incredible testimonial from a group of people with such investment in the food and drink sector!

The event was a roaring success and Barnham Broom was pleased to play our part in its success. With the highest of standards in food, we are thrilled the delegates enjoyed the catering we offered, whilst the versatile spaces, the location and the setting of the venue worked perfectly for the agenda of the Nourish Conference.

The Broadland Food Innovation Centre remarked on how our excellent staff members are incredibly passionate about what they do. They loved the beautiful and versatile spaces, the gorgeous surroundings and the stunning choice of food that our venue offers. Event organiser Charlotte summarises: “Lots of attendees complimented the gorgeous views of the golf course and how despite the constant rain it was still stunning and green! All in all, we cannot wait to host another event at Barnham Broom.”

And we cannot wait to have you back for your next event!

The young striker, having recently been promoted to play for the Canaries’ first-team after rising through the squads, is incredibly excited to have us as a sponsor, especially knowing the strong relationship NCFC already has with Barnham Broom. At our shirt signing dinner, Karama battled the nerves during his first-ever guest appearance admirably, enjoying the food and having a great evening.

Kamara isn’t a golfer at the moment, but is looking forward to visiting Barnham Broom to check out the facilities, especially the gym and pool.

Meet the Team: Emily Blake, Pastry Chef

We know here at Barnham Broom that our reputation as a top-class leisure and hospitality venue derives from our dedicated team of staff who put the customer and their happiness at the forefront of all they do. In turn, we like to do all we can to nurture our staff and their development – after all, happy staff means happy customers.

One such staff member, Emily Blake has been a stalwart part of the team at Barnham Broom for almost a decade and recently we have helped her to progress her hospitality career. She began her journey with us working as front of house, where her friendly welcome made her a firm favourite amongst our customers. Being a natural at providing exceptional customer service, Emily understands the value of a great customer experience.

Emily Blake Barnham Broom
Emily Blake, Pastry Chef at Barnham Broom with one of her afternoon teas.

As much as she loved being front of house, Emily has had a lifelong passion for baking and patisserie and has always had a hankering to utilise her skills in customer care from the opposite side of the kitchen doors. It was only when Emily recently gave birth to her baby daughter Harper that the stars really aligned for her culinary career. “Once I became a Mum it was a real chance for me to take stock of my career so far and to think about the next steps I wanted to take. It felt like the right time for a change and to progress my career within the kitchen as I’d always dreamed of,” explains Emily.

Emily’s skills mean that Barnham Broom is one of the few venues in East Anglia that has a dedicated in-house patisserie chef and the tasty morsels she cooks up in our kitchens means customers can continue to enjoy her fantastic customer service while she dons her chef’s whites.

Emily creates sweet treats for both the AA Rosette Brasserie, the Sports Bar, as well as for events, meetings and conferences that are held at Barnham Broom.

Barnham Broom was only too happy to assist Emily with her career transition to Pastry Chef, supporting her with her endeavours to realise her career dreams. She has been creating all things patisserie ever since, from afternoon tea, breads and sweet treats for both the AA Rosette Brasserie and the Sports Bar; as well as for events, meetings and conferences that are held at Barnham Broom.

Emily’s speciality is her delicious afternoon teas.

To taste Emily’s afternoon tea or to experience our AA Rosette Brasserie or Sports Bar, visit barnham-broom.co.uk/eat for more information and to book.
