Green Tourism & Sustainability Policy
To be a leader in the hospitality sector for our region, Barnham Broom is dedicated to promoting the concept of green tourism and sustainability. Proud holders of a Green Tourism Bronze Award, we view this achievement as our starting point. We are actively working towards our Silver Award, driven by a structured framework of measurable environmental targets.
To ensure our commitment is transparent and impactful, we monitor and aim for the following performance data across our resort operations:
1. Carbon Reduction & Energy Efficiency
We take personal pride in minimising our energy footprint through smart technology and staff-led operational standards.
Our Target: Achieve a 15% reduction in overall energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions over the next 24 months.
LED Transformation: We have transitioned over 85% of resort lighting to high-efficiency LED bulbs, complemented by sensor controls in public corridors and low-traffic zones to prevent surplus energy usage.
Operational Controls: Led by our departmental Green Champions, we enforce strict “switch-off” policies for water, gas, and electricity across all office and operational spaces when not in use.
2. Waste Minimisation & Recycling Rates
Cutting down on landfill waste is a core operational priority. We actively track our waste streams to maximise resource circularity.
Our Target: Maintain a minimum 75% recycling and diversion-from-landfill rate across the entire resort, including golf, hotel, spa, and dining operations.
Commercial Cardboard Baling: By utilising an on-site commercial cardboard baler, we have successfully reduced our required recycling bin collections by 40%, significantly lowering the carbon footprint and traffic impact associated with waste transport miles.
Single-Use Elimination: We have eliminated plastic miniatures in our guest bedrooms, replacing them with eco-friendly, refillable toiletries to reduce plastic waste by an estimated 15,000 bottles annually.
3. Supply Chain & “Food Miles”
Supporting our local economy directly influences our environmental footprint.
Our Benchmark: Commit to sourcing at least 70% of our fresh kitchen ingredients from within a 40-mile radius of the resort.
Sourcing Impact: By partnering directly with elite regional suppliers—such as Winbirri Vineyard in Surlingham and Cleveleys Butchers—we significantly decrease food transport miles and associated carbon emissions while showcasing the very best of Norfolk’s produce.
Ethical Standards: All tea and coffee served across our food outlets are ethically sourced and certified, ensuring fair practices at the point of origin.
The Role of Our Green Champions:
Sustainability cannot be achieved from a spreadsheet. We have established an internal committee of Green Champions representing every department—from greenkeeping and kitchen staff to reception and spa teams—to continuously audit our energy use, pioneer new recycling initiatives, and educate colleagues on minimising our day-to-day environmental impact.
